      Jean Aussaguel has been appointed as CNES’s Director of Accounting with a seat on the agency’s Executive Committee, effective 1 September 2020. His appointment follows the decision of Pierre Dentand, the current holder, to take retirement.

    2. FRANCE-UNITED ARAB EMIRATES SPACE COOPERATION- CNES AND UAESA TAKE PART IN 12TH SESSION OF STRATEGIC DIALOGUE

      Wednesday 3 June, at the 12th session of the Strategic Dialogue between France and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), held by videoconference due to the continuing COVID-19 health crisis, CNES and the United Arab Emirates Space Agency (UAESA) reviewed their progress in space cooperation. The Strategic Dialogue provides for an annual high-level meeting to promote and advance cooperation between the two nations. A dedicated Space sub-committee, co-chaired by CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall and UAESA Director General Mohammed Al Ahbabi, governs space cooperation between France and the UAE.

    3. CNES at the 2019 International Paris Air Show- French Guiana takes centre stage

      For the 53rd International Paris Air Show, CNES organized its traditional French Guiana Day on Thursday 20 June. French Guiana is a key asset for Europe’s space programme, with the ideal location of the Guiana Space Centre (CSG)—the world’s most efficient launch base—guaranteeing an independent space launch capability and projecting the region on the world stage. Space supports 4,700 direct, indirect and induced jobs in the territory, equivalent to 15% of its GDP.

    4. CNES and ESA to take part in Orange Silicon Valley’s Fab Force program

      CNES and ESA officially announce their partnership with Orange Silicon Valley, through which they will be taking part in its Fab Force alliance. The aim of this one-year partnership is to forge a closer relationship between the two agencies and the Silicon Valley ecosystem, foster new ties in this region, promote European industry and expertise in the United States and prime the pipeline of talent between the two continents.

    5. CNES takes over chair for next six months of International Charter on Space and Major Disasters

      The 40th meeting of the Steering Committee of the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters is being held this week in Toulouse from 22 to 26 October. On this occasion, CNES is officially taking over the charter’s rotating chair on behalf of France for the next six months, and for the sixth time since its inception.

    8. French-U.S. Jason-2 satellite takes on new altimetry mission

      Over the past nine years, the Jason-2 ocean-observing satellite conceived by CNES and NASA in partnership with Eumetsat (European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites) and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has expanded our knowledge of global sea level change, ocean currents and climate phenomena like El Niño and La Niña. From next month, it will be taking on an additional role: improving maps of Earth’s sea floor.

    9. President Hollande and CNES take science culture to youngsters

      On a visit to the Vaulx-en-Velin planetarium, President François Hollande spoke to astronaut Thomas Pesquet during a live link-up with the International Space Station (ISS) to engage youngsters and get them interested in space as CNES kicks off a unique operation allowing 1,300 schools to perform the same experiments as the astronaut on the station.

    11. CNES Board of Directors convenes Takes decisions on MicroCarb and SVOM satellites

      Thursday 8 December, CNES’s Board of Directors convened in Paris for its 348th session. Among the items on the agenda, special attention was given to the MicroCarb mission to measure global atmospheric concentration of carbon gas, and to the SVOM mission to detect gamma-ray bursts.

    12. Ariane 6 to take Europe’s launchers to new heights CNES, ESA and ASL confirm development of new launcher

      The Ariane 6 programme, approved at the ESA Ministerial Council meeting of 2 December 2014, seeks to halve launch costs per kilogram compared to Ariane 5. CNES has responsibility for developing ground support equipment at the Guiana Space Centre (CSG) and as such is in charge of building the new ELA4 launch complex for Ariane 6. An amendment to the contract of 12 August 2015 was signed today at ESA headquarters in the presence of Thierry Mandon, Secretary of State for Higher Education and Research.

    14. Didier Faivre takes over as new Director of the Guiana Space Centre

      Didier Faivre is the new Director of the Guiana Space (CSG), effective 1 October. He was previously Assistant Director to the CNES President and before that Director of Navigation Programmes at the European Space Agency (ESA).

      CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall was in Rabat on Wednesday 7 September to take part in the “Defence and Climate Change” conference—a key milestone in the preparations for COP22, to be held in Marrakesh from 7 to 18 November. His attendance was at the invitation of Abdellatif Loudiyi, Morocco’s Minister Delegate to the Head of Government for the administration of National Defence, whose remit covers space affairs.

      France’s industrial property observatory has published the ranking of applicants that filed patents with INPI, the national industrial property institute, in the past year. CNES ranked 35th with 40 applications published, 10 places higher than the previous year.

    20. France takes up chair of Cospas-Sarsat Council
